Quilt Size Calculator: Quilt Size for Your Bed
Work out the right quilt size before you cut. Choose your bed size, side drop, foot drop and head tuck, and see the recommended finished quilt size, with the formula in steps.
Calculate your quilt size
Bed sizes are US standard mattress sizes, shown in inches, and are not changed by the unit toggle. Actual mattresses vary, so measure your own bed if it is not standard.
Side drop is how far the quilt hangs over each side of the bed, past the edge of the mattress. Side drop must be greater than zero. It is counted twice in quilt width, once for each side.
Foot drop is how far the quilt hangs over the foot of the bed, past the edge of the mattress. Foot drop must be zero or greater. It is counted once in quilt length.
Head tuck is extra length at the head only, for quilts that go over the pillow. Head tuck must be zero or greater. If your quilt does not go over the pillow, enter 0.
This calculator gives a finished quilt size, not a cut size, and not a fabric cut size. It does not add seam allowance, borders, or shrinkage, because it gives a finished quilt size. For borders, use the Border Calculator. For backing, use the Backing Calculator. For batting, use the Batting Calculator.
Enter your measurements, then calculate.

How the calculator works
Step 1: Recommended quilt width
Recommended quilt width equals bed width plus 2 times side drop. The side drop hangs over both sides of the bed, so it is counted twice, once for each side. For a Queen bed 60 by 80 inches, side drop 15 inches, recommended quilt width equals 60 plus 2 times 15, which is 60 plus 30, which is 90 inches.
Step 2: Recommended quilt length
Recommended quilt length equals bed length plus foot drop plus head tuck. The foot drop hangs over the foot only, so it is counted once. The head tuck is extra length at the head only, for quilts that go over the pillow, so it is counted once. For a Queen bed 60 by 80 inches, foot drop 15 inches, head tuck 0 inches, recommended quilt length equals 80 plus 15 plus 0, which is 95 inches.
Step 3: Recommended quilt size
Recommended quilt size is recommended quilt width by recommended quilt length. For a Queen bed 60 by 80 inches, side drop 15 inches, foot drop 15 inches, head tuck 0 inches, recommended quilt size equals 90 by 95 inches.
Assumptions, shown next to the result
Mattress sizes are US standard sizes as listed in the bed size list. Actual mattresses vary, so measure your own bed if it is not standard. Drop is the user own choice, and a larger drop covers more of the bed sides and foot. This calculator does not add seam allowance, borders, or shrinkage, because it gives a finished quilt size, not a fabric cut size. Borders, backing and batting are worked out with their own calculators, linked below the result.

Worked example, checked against the calculator
Queen bed 60 by 80 inches, side drop 15 inches, foot drop 15 inches, head tuck 0 inches.
Recommended quilt width: 60 plus 2 times 15 equals 60 plus 30, which is 90 inches.
Recommended quilt length: 80 plus 15 plus 0 equals 95 inches.
Recommended quilt size: 90 by 95 inches. This is a finished quilt size, not a cut size.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate quilt size for a bed?
Recommended quilt width equals bed width plus 2 times side drop, because the side drop hangs over both sides of the bed. Recommended quilt length equals bed length plus foot drop plus head tuck, because the foot drop hangs over the foot only and the head tuck is extra length at the head only. For example, a Queen bed 60 by 80 inches, side drop 15 inches, foot drop 15 inches, head tuck 0 inches, gives a recommended quilt 90 by 95 inches.
What is drop in quilt size?
Drop is how far the quilt hangs over the side or the foot of the bed, past the edge of the mattress. Side drop hangs over both sides of the bed, so it is counted twice in quilt width. Foot drop hangs over the foot only, so it is counted once in quilt length. Drop is the user own choice, and a larger drop covers more of the bed sides and foot.
Does this quilt size include pillow tuck?
Yes, through the head tuck input. Head tuck is extra length at the head only, for quilts that go over the pillow. If your quilt does not go over the pillow, enter head tuck 0. For example, a Full bed 54 by 75 inches, side drop 15 inches, foot drop 15 inches, head tuck 10 inches, gives a recommended quilt 84 by 100 inches.
